Courtney Martin
I make pots you can use. I like that the function is the reason for the object. I enjoy making something beautiful to play a role in someone’s daily life.
Courtney Martin is a studio potter living and working in the mountains of North Carolina. She grew up just outside of New York City on Long Island. Courtney attended college at the University of New Mexico; there she discovered and fell in love with clay. After graduating with a BFA in ceramics, Courtney moved to western North Carolina to work with and apprentice for the incredible community of potters that surround Penland School of Craft. In 2007 Courtney built her wood kiln, and in 2009 she built her studio beside it. Courtney makes functional pots meant for daily use, combining traditional techniques and materials with a modern aesthetic. She also uses her work and her platform to bring awareness to issues she feels strongly about: social justice, climate change, and abortion rights. Courtney teaches the occasional workshop at craft schools and universities, and her pots are sold in galleries nationally, in online and in person sales, and in her showroom which she shares with glass artist and husband John Geci. Courtney is a founding member of Spruce Pine Potters Market and Clay to Table, and she serves on the board of Crafting the Future.
